Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing reasons, advantages, and disadvantages of living close to one's birthplace, though the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the introduction states that the trend has both pros and cons, but the body paragraphs focus predominantly on the reasons and advantages rather than providing a balanced exploration of disadvantages. Examples, such as mentioning a research study from 2017 about living costs, are introduced but lack specific detail or clear connection to the argument. The position is discernible throughout the essay, but the overall treatment of the prompt is basic and restricted in depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some organisation with a clear paragraph structure, using a basic introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disrupted. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or mechanically, such as the frequent formulaic phrases like 'To expound it' and 'To explicate it'. Referencing is also not always clear, which creates some choppy transitions between ideas. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better management to build a smoother narrative.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'emotional comfort' and 'emergency support', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form throughout the text. Examples include 'birth place' written as two words, 'cltural connectioin' (cultural connection), 'buisness', 'sourrinding' (surroundings), and awkward collocations like 'living cost on another site'. While these errors do not completely prevent understanding, they cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic formulas. Attempts at complex sentence forms are frequently faulty, such as 'Living close to the birth place by people have various reasons' and 'sometime a person have in a such situation where the support of his family is neceesary'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions that can cause difficulty for the reader. Punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i', also persist throughout the essay.
