Overall6.0

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing reasons why people stay in their birthplace, alongside the advantages and disadvantages. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack extension. For instance, the discussion on disadvantages touches upon employment, personal growth, and education, but these points are supported with limited examples rather than fully elaborated arguments. Additionally, it is important to note a specific limitation: the length requirement was not met, as the response falls slightly short of the minimum 250-word count, sitting at 249 words. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to fully develop all parts of the prompt with more extended explanations and robust examples while ensuring the minimum word length is securely satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the essay logically. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, reasons, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Fisrtly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly', which establishes a clear sequence of points. However, some cohesive elements feel a bit mechanical or basic, and referencing is occasionally slightly loose. The bridging between paragraphs could flow more smoothly to ensure an effortless progression of ideas. To achieve a higher band, the writer should integrate a wider variety of cohesive ties more flexibly and ensure transitions between sentences and paragraphs feel entirely natural rather than formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'indispensable', 'inheritance properties', and 'career development'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'Fisrtly', 'one place' instead of 'a place', 'inheritance properties' instead of 'inherited properties', and spelling errors like 'teeangers', 'lot's', and 'oppurtunities'. These lexical slips do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the score to this level. To improve to a higher band, the writer needs to use a wider and more precise range of vocabulary with accurate spelling, better word forms, and natural collocations throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing an attempt at varied grammatical forms. There are instances of successful complex phrasing, such as conditional and relative structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and mechanics, including articles and verb forms, such as 'living in a one place', 'they were grew up', 'getting way to comfortable', 'Employment an personal growth are the biggest lost', 'who lives', and 'living in the one house'. While these errors rarely completely obscure the writer's meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact readability. To reach a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex sentence patterns, minimize errors in basic agreement and articles, and secure greater grammatical accuracy overall.
