Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most people especially in rural areas prefers to live in the area where they born. They are so much emotionally connected to the area and feels more safe. They have some sort of fear moving out from their city, this might be because they are unaware of the culture, living of another place and think that their life is easy being near their place. In my opinion, living close to hometown have both prons and cons. Let me discuss both in the following paragraphs.

I would like to start with the Pros of staying close to the hometown. It is safe for family members as you know about the locality and the crowd of the city. People tend to have less fear of criminal activities. It is also good for their social circle as they know most of the people around them, which is really helpful incase of emergency situations. Also, most of them have their own business which is easy to establish and maintain as compare to other city.

There are few disadvantages as well such as people miss many opportunities required for their personal and professional growth. Mainly in rural areas where schools and employment are less, children tend to left less educated or they don't get the jobs. These people are less confident, and are unaware of their own potential and skills. They are just emotional and can be easily manipulated.

I would like to conclude this by saying that it is completely an individuals choice where they want to live and how they want to spend their lives. Living in or near the hometown have both advantages and disadvantages, personally as well as professionally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions: you suggest emotional attachment, familiarity and fear of adapting as reasons, then discuss benefits and drawbacks. The advantages—feeling safe, having a social network and maintaining a local business—are relevant, as are the concerns about limited education and employment. However, some points are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that people are “less confident” and “can be easily manipulated” is broad and needs a clear link to staying near home. The reasons section is also less developed than the advantages and disadvantages. To strengthen the response, explain how familiarity or family ties influence the decision, and support key claims with a specific example or consequence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of discussion easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “I would like to start” and “There are few disadvantages.” These transitions are understandable, though they can feel formulaic, and the conclusion mostly repeats the introduction rather than drawing the discussion together. Some links between ideas could be clearer: for instance, the shift from limited schooling and employment to people being “less confident” needs an explicit explanation. Use more precise connections between cause and effect, and refer back to the central question consistently, so the progression feels more developed rather than a list of points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “emotionally connected,” “social circle,” “criminal activities,” and “personal and professional growth.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “establish and maintain” a business. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, which limits precision: “prons and cons,” “living of another place,” and “as compare to other city” do not sound natural in this context. “Crowd of the city” is also unclear when you appear to mean the local community. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check word forms and spelling. More precise terms for local ties, employment prospects and adapting to a new community would help express your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including explanations with “because” and a relative clause in “which is really helpful in case of emergency situations.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction remain. For example, “Most people … prefers” should use a plural verb, while “where they born” needs a passive form (“where they were born”). In “children tend to left less educated,” the verb pattern is incorrect, and “living close to hometown have” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Review these patterns and check articles and plurals. Greater accuracy in these areas, alongside your attempts at complex sentences, would make the response smoother.
