Student answer (Band 6.0)

The world is vast, possibly too vast for our comprehension. There are hundreds of countries, thousands of cultures and billions of people out there that we may never witness. Even with the advent of the internet and the world becoming a global village, there is till so much out there left to be explored. Some people will have the privilege of exploring the much they can while others unfortunatley will not.

For those who may spend most of their lives in the confines of their birthplace, there is a lot of contributory factors. One of the main reasons is poverty. For people born in second and third world countries, leaving their birthplace will be very difficult as they do not have the financial and monetary capacity to do so. For those who are not limited by financial constraints, increasing strict immigration laws might pose a problem. The rise in strict immigration laws in desirable first world countries against people from second or third world countries make it difficult for individuals seeking ot migrate for whatever reason.

Someone spending his or her life in her birth place has it's pros and cons. On the bright side it makes you more grounded and acclamitised with your surrounding and local traditions. It also gives yu the oppotunity to be closer to family. However, the disadvantages include missing out on experiencing first hand the wonderful cultures out there. You also never get to meet individuals of differentcolors, races and capabilities.

We only get to live this life once and I believe it should be lived to the fullest, irrespective of where you find yourself.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both questions: poverty and restrictive immigration policies are offered as reasons, and you identify benefits such as closeness to family and familiarity with local traditions, alongside the loss of cultural experiences. These are relevant points, but several are asserted rather than explained. For example, the discussion of immigration laws does not show how they specifically affect people who might otherwise remain near their birthplace, and the disadvantages are mostly listed rather than developed with an example or consequence. The final statement about living life to the fullest gives a general opinion but does not clearly weigh the advantages against the disadvantages. Explain each main idea further and make your overall view more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on reasons, a paragraph on advantages and disadvantages, and a concluding statement. This makes the main stages easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, progression is sometimes loose. The opening spends several sentences on the scale of the world before connecting this to the question, and the final paragraph shifts to a broad reflection rather than drawing together the points discussed. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated contrast signalled by “On the bright side” and “However.” Use clearer links between each reason and the choice to stay, and make the conclusion summarise your answer. More precise referencing would also help readers follow who “they” refers to.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial constraints,” “immigration laws,” “birthplace,” and “local traditions.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common expressions show an attempt to vary your language. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “the confines of their birthplace,” “the much they can,” and “meet individuals of different colors, races and capabilities.” Spelling errors, including “unfortunatley,” “acclamitised,” and “oppotunity,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise phrasing rather than elaborate expressions, and proofread spelling. For example, “experience other cultures firsthand” is clearer and more idiomatic than the wording used here.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional clause “For those who may spend most of their lives…” and the sentence beginning “Even with the advent of the internet…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “there is a lot of contributory factors,” the subject and verb do not agree; “Someone spending his or her life in her birth place has it's pros and cons” has inconsistent pronouns and an incorrect possessive form. The sentence about immigration laws is also difficult to control and would be clearer if divided or restructured. Check agreement, pronoun consistency, and apostrophes, and use complex sentences only when you can maintain accurate structure.
