Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manjot Kaur,

I am so happy to hear that you are continuing your studies at my university.

I will give all the .information that will be helpful for you. I live with my friends in a house we are four friends living together. I think when you are a student, the best way to live with friends because first you can share your rent and groceries which helps you save some money in the future.

Some things which i recommend to prevent mistakes, make contract of living for at least 1 year. Always live with those people who are ready to cooperate with you and help each other when needed.

Thank you so much for your time . If you need further consideration let me know.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the development of the ideas. While you addressed the three bullet points, the descriptions are quite brief. For instance, you mention living with friends but do not describe the actual accommodation (e.g., a flat, a dorm, or its location). The advice on finding a place is limited to 'living with friends,' and the warning about mistakes is somewhat vague. To improve, you should expand on each point with specific details or personal anecdotes to ensure the response is fully developed and meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is generally easy to follow, but the paragraphing is inconsistent and the flow between ideas is somewhat mechanical. You use basic cohesive devices like 'first' and 'some things which', but the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. The structure lacks a clear closing paragraph beyond the sign-off. To improve, ensure each bullet point is addressed in its own paragraph and use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') to connect your sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is functional but limited. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'living with friends' and 'help each other'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'further consideration' which is not the standard way to end a friendly email (a better choice would be 'further questions'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to housing, such as 'tenancy agreement', 'commute', 'utilities', or 'shared facilities', and ensure your tone remains consistently friendly and appropriate for an email to a friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that affect the clarity of your writing. For example, 'the best way to live with friends' is missing a verb, and 'make contract of living' should be 'make a rental contract'. There are also punctuation issues, such as the space before the period in 'time .'. Your sentence structures are mostly simple; you should aim to include more complex sentences using relative clauses or conditional structures (e.g., 'If you are looking for a place, I would suggest...'). Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will also help improve your accuracy.
