Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hi KB, How're you?

I hope you're as fit as a fiddle. I'm over the moon to know about your acceptance to study 'Masters in Business administration' in Paris with me and want to congratulate you. I was really desiring this thing to happen.

In the context of accommodation, I intend to rent a single bedroom apartment and have no issues if you're willing to share the abode with me. Even though the place will not be quite spacious, it'll

definitely aid us in saving expenditures that may incur while living alone in a conurbation.

Since I know you're a fitness freak, I've thought to join either yoga classes or swimming lesson in our free time. Moreover, every weekend, we'll go for grocery shopping and will have some fun time. Not to forget about group studies to get desired marks. Excited to be your room partner. Your friend,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to address the core requirements of the prompt. While you mention living arrangements, you did not describe where you lived as a student, nor did you provide advice on how to look for accommodation or warn about common mistakes. The content focuses almost entirely on your personal excitement and future plans with the friend. Furthermore, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. To improve, ensure you explicitly cover all three bullet points provided in the instructions and expand on each point with relevant details to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The email is somewhat coherent, but the progression of ideas is disjointed because the bullet points were not addressed. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Even though', which help link sentences. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the email is clumped together, making it difficult to follow the transition from the greeting to the proposed living arrangements. To improve, use clear paragraph breaks for each distinct point (e.g., one paragraph for your past experience, one for advice, and one for warnings) to guide the reader through your response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary with some idiomatic expressions like 'fit as a fiddle' and 'over the moon'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices. For example, 'desiring this thing to happen' is unnatural; 'hoping for this' would be better. 'Conurbation' is a sophisticated word, but it feels slightly out of place in a casual email to a friend. You have enough vocabulary to communicate, but you need to focus on using words that fit the informal tone of an email to a friend while ensuring accuracy in collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

Your grammar is generally clear, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentences. There are some minor errors, such as 'I've thought to join' (should be 'I've thought about joining') and 'expenditures that may incur' (should be 'expenditures that may be incurred'). Punctuation is mostly accurate, though the opening is a bit informal. The sentence structures are functional, but you should aim for more variety in your complex structures to demonstrate higher proficiency. Overall, your errors do not impede communication, but they are noticeable.
