Student answer (Band 6.5)

Subject- Regarding the course and acommmodation

Dear friend,

I hope you are doing well

I am writing to inform you about the course at the university where I studied as my course was business management which was very beneficial for my career development. When I chose this Chandigarh university I felt so nervous as it was my first time to live another city instead of my hometown. However, I was so excited to meet new students and teachers.

This university gave their own acommodation, so, this is the best way for your living as if students have any problem then they can easily complain at their department. Also, their members' behaviour was very professional.

Moreover, students usually mistakes when they choose living areas, so, I recommended you to live at their own private sectors. There are several facilities to students For instance study room, park, free wifi.

Hence, I believe that this advice will be very useful for your study.

Thank you

Best Wishes,

Komalpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You described your own experience, recommended university accommodation, and warned against common mistakes. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the warning about 'private sectors' is slightly unclear and lacks specific detail regarding what mistakes students actually make. To improve, ensure that your advice is more explicit and clearly linked to the prompt's requirements. While you have covered the task, the depth of explanation could be enhanced to provide a more helpful and natural tone suitable for a letter to a friend.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The email follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive. For example, the transition from discussing your own experience to recommending university accommodation could be smoother. Improving the use of referencing and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'beneficial', 'career development', and 'professional'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'students usually mistakes' (should be 'make mistakes') and 'live another city' (should be 'live in another city'). Additionally, 'private sectors' is not the most natural way to describe private rental accommodation. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, you should aim to use more precise collocations and ensure that your word forms are accurate to achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'This university gave their own acommodation' (should be 'provided'), 'as if students have any problem' (should be 'if students have'), and 'I recommended you to live' (should be 'I recommend'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you reach a higher band.
