Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Nick,

First of all Congratulations to you, I am glad to hear that you got enrolled at the University of Toronto. I am happy to give you an important kickstart for your new beginning from my past experience at the university.

I used to lived on campus at the boys hostel because it is easy to commute and affordable at that time. You can find lots of accommodation for students nearby the campus though I suggest you to check university official accommodation site where you can find best and genuine places to stay. You can also ask your seniors they will give you a proper advice and recommendation.

Most importantly do not make couple of mistakes that I do while deciding the place. Firstly, take a look at hostel canteen and food services because as a new comer food is the most important that you will not compromise. Secondly, ask about the laundry system and lastly opt for the cleaning service because you will definitely not get time for that.

Let me know if you need any other further assistance or advice. Congratulation once again and have a bright future.

Yours lovingly,

Yashraj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You described your past living situation on campus, recommended the university's official website and seniors as resources, and provided specific warnings about food and cleaning services. The tone is appropriate for a friendly email, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail or personal anecdotes regarding your experience to make the advice feel more authentic and comprehensive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The email is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points. You use some cohesive devices like 'First of all', 'Most importantly', and 'Firstly', which help the flow of the text. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be linked more smoothly to improve the overall progression of ideas. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and serves the purpose of the communication well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'accommodation', 'commute', and 'on campus'. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'boys hostel' (which is slightly informal or region-specific) and 'proper advice' (which is a bit redundant). You also have a few minor errors, such as 'new comer' (should be one word: 'newcomer'). While the vocabulary is sufficient, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or varied adjectives would help elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'I used to lived' should be 'I used to live', and 'mistakes that I do' should be 'mistakes that I made'. Additionally, 'nearby the campus' is slightly awkward; 'near the campus' is more natural. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on verb tense consistency and preposition usage will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
