Dear ..........,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mathew,

First of all congrats on admission for yours masters in Toronto university were I had completed my masters in Mechanical engineering too. It is one of the best universities in Canada with well experienced faculties.

I would like to give you a few advices before choosing an accommodation over there. During my studies I used to live in the students hotel within the college premises. But I won't recommend this to you because, the rooms over there are very congested and the bathrooms are not tidy as well.

I always suggest the private student hostels near to the university because they are much cheaper and good in terms of cleanliness. I will search for an apartment within your budget through my contacts and let you know soon. Moreover, You can search through online platforms such as Facebook and other social medias.

However, relying on fraud agencies by new comers are the most common mistake here. It is very hard to sort good among them, hence do not spend any money to them before watching the property.

Let me know if you need any help on this matter keep me updated.

yours lovingly,

Jithu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your past living situation, provided a clear recommendation for finding accommodation, and included a relevant warning about potential scams. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'why' behind your recommendations to provide more depth. For instance, explaining the specific benefits of private hostels beyond just cleanliness would make the advice more persuasive. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The email is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'First of all' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the final sentence of the second paragraph. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would help to elevate the coherence of your writing to a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'congested', 'premises', and 'accommodation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'congrats on admission for yours masters' (should be 'congratulations on your admission to your master's') and 'relying on fraud agencies' (should be 'falling victim to fraudulent agencies'). The use of 'well experienced faculties' is also slightly unnatural; 'experienced faculty members' would be more precise. Focusing on collocations and ensuring the correct form of nouns and adjectives will help improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'were I had completed' (should be 'where I completed'), 'a few advices' (advice is uncountable), and 'do not spend any money to them' (should be 'on them'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some minor issues with comma placement. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Proofreading for these small errors will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
