Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mehul,
I hope you are doing will. A big congratulations on getting an addmission at the prestigious university. I am writing this letter to give you some suggestions about an accomodation.
I was also a student in the same Loyalist university. I graduated in April, 2023 with the good results. Moreover, I was living close to school so it was convenient to commute.
Let me give you some suggestions on how to look for place to rent. Firstly, I would advice you to find it from the Marketplace, it will give you a range of options for the places. Secondly, you can also explore Kjiji app which is also specially designed for an accomodations.
Moreover, never leave with the families while you are in school because it will hinder with your studies.
I hope you find a suitable place for you to live and good luck for the future.
Kind regards,
Pragati

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points: describing your past accommodation, recommending search methods, and providing a warning. However, the development of these ideas is quite limited. For instance, the description of where you lived is vague, mentioning only that it was 'close to school'. The warning about not living with families is also underdeveloped, as it lacks a clear explanation of why this would 'hinder' studies. To achieve a higher band, you should provide more specific details or personal anecdotes to flesh out your points. The tone is appropriate for an email to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The email is organized into logical paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover' to link your points. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear; for example, in the sentence 'never leave with the families', the word 'leave' appears to be a misuse of 'live', which disrupts the flow of the argument. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that your sentences connect more naturally would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'prestigious', 'convenient', and 'commute'. However, there are several spelling errors ('will' instead of 'well', 'addmission', 'accomodation', 'Kjiji') and word choice inaccuracies that detract from the quality of the response. The phrase 'leave with the families' is a significant error in collocation, as it likely meant 'live with families'. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and ensuring that the words you choose accurately reflect the intended meaning in the context of renting property.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'getting an addmission' (article usage), 'I was living close to school' (tense choice), 'I would advice you' (confusing noun/verb forms), and 'hinder with your studies' (incorrect preposition). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, you should work on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that your verb forms are consistent and accurate.
