Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Meera,

I hope you may find in excellent health and high spirits. I am delighted to knew that you have received an admission in my university conestoga in Canada. I received your letter last week and you asked me about your some doubts in it. I am writing this letter to welcoming you to in my college as well as clear some doubts of you.

Since we have been friends for last 10 years I know everything about what you like or dislike. I read your first question after arriving the Canada where do I live? Do not worry about it. I live in a spacious apartment that has 4 Bedrooms , Halls and kitchen and there is a basement too. It is definitely convenient for our college travel. We used to share this apartment among 4 people. But , nowadays one of my room partner has moved to another place for their job purpose so there is a space in my apartment for a new member. I would like to invite you at my apartment to live with us. My all roommates are supportive and kind so you don not face any problem living them.

I would also like to give some advise about sharing apartment with others. You do not have make any noise of music and anything during nights and also you have to pay 3 months deposit around 2400 dollars in advance.

Once you paid it, you became a member of our apartment. Do not think about private flats because it has become an expensive for students.

I would like to invite you to at my place to live with us. If you are interested , provide me your ticket details when you arrive and I would like to come to pick up you at airport.

I am looking forward to your positive response.

With Best Regards,

Nikita Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all the bullet points effectively. You successfully described where you lived as a student by mentioning your spacious apartment with 4 bedrooms, a hall, a kitchen, and a basement. You also recommended the best way to look for accommodation by inviting your friend to share your apartment and warning them against private flats because they are too expensive. Furthermore, you warned about mistakes students make, such as making noise at night and the need for a 3-month deposit. The tone is appropriate for an informal email to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is entirely clear throughout. All requirements are addressed properly, earning a strong band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs with a logical progression of ideas, moving from the greeting and opening pleasantries to describing your current living situation, giving advice, and offering airport pickup. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics. However, there are some minor cohesive faults and repetitive transitions, such as repeating the invitation to live at your place ('I would like to invite you at my apartment' and 'I would like to invite you to at my place') across different paragraphs. Referencing is mostly clear, but overall cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'spacious', 'convenient', 'supportive', and 'deposit'. However, there are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'received an admission' instead of 'received an offer' or 'been admitted', 'arriving the Canada' instead of 'arriving in Canada', and 'room partner' instead of 'roommate' or 'flatmate'. There are also minor preposition errors like 'invite you at my apartment'. Despite these limitations and awkward phrases, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly without causing severe misunderstandings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If you are interested, provide me your ticket details...') and relative clauses ('an apartment that has 4 Bedrooms'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing sprinkled throughout the text, including 'I hope you may find in excellent health', 'delighted to knew', 'some doubts of you', 'you do not have make any noise', and 'it has become an expensive for students'. Punctuation is also sometimes faulty, with irregular spacing around commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
