Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Rahul,

I hope you are doing well! I am writing this letter about your concern regarding the accomodations at university. I was living in the neighbourhood of sg high way. This is best place to live in. It was two story appartment which was rented by four friends of mine. It had seperate toilets and kitchen for students. Moreover, it was design for university pupils.

I would recommend some sites which can helps you to get place where you can stay. Furthermore, I will give you some contacts which helps you. They are in this business since long time. Although, it is best to visit place before renting that property.

On the other hand, it is necessary to being cautious before paying money. Many students do not know the scams and lost their money. Other than that, they do not aware of this apps and sites which could saves a lot of money and times. So, check this details and visit personally.

I hope this would give you more insights.

See you soon friend,

Bye for now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required in the task prompt. You described where you lived as a student by mentioning the two-story apartment near the highway shared with friends. You recommended searching methods by suggesting websites and useful contacts, and you warned your friend about potential housing scams and the importance of checking properties in person. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout, matching the requirements of a general training email to a friend. The ideas are relevant and clearly address the prompt, showing a good understanding of the task requirements. Overall, all parts of the task are adequately addressed with a clear focus and consistent purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, each dealing with a distinct part of the prompt, which aids readability. There is an overall logical flow from greeting to describing past accommodation, giving recommendations, offering warnings, and closing the email. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or underused, such as relying heavily on basic linkers like 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraph transitions could be smoother. While paragraphing is used sufficiently, the mechanical nature of the cohesive ties limits the score to a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message effectively. You attempted some less common vocabulary items such as 'neighbourhood', 'scams', and 'insights'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('accomodations' instead of accommodations, 'appartment' instead of apartment, 'seperate' instead of separate) and word choice inaccuracies (e.g., 'since long time' instead of 'for a long time', 'do not aware' instead of 'are not aware'). These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 6.0 because of the frequency of basic slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'I was living' should ideally be 'I lived' or 'I used to live', and 'it was design' should be 'it was designed'. Furthermore, expressions such as 'is necessary to being cautious' contain grammatical inaccuracies with gerunds and infinitives, and 'could saves' contains a tense agreement error. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency means the grammar does not consistently reach the level required for a Band 7.
