Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Harsh,

I hope you doing well. Firstly, congratulation to you for getting admission at your dream university. I am writing to advice about a place for your accommodation.

Two years ago, I lived at Gandhi apartment which is located near King lake. I think it is a good place for you because they provide a house-helper for cleaning and laundry. Moreover, the apartment is well maintained. Furthermore, they provide breakfast and two meals. What is a good think about this apartment it is fit in your budget. Additionally, there is a bus stop at outside of the apartment. So, you can commute buy bus and it's only takes fifteen minutes.

I recommend to contact Mr. Smith threw website as well as email. This is the website www.gandhigroup.com and his email is [redacted email]. I think this is the best way for you to look for accommodation.

I would like to warn you about some silly mistakes that students make when they choosing accommodation. Firstly, visit your accommodation and check all the things. Secondly, conform the numbers of students who share apartment with you. And main thing is conform the rent means utility and water bills are included or not. When you conform all the things after that pay the advance rent otherwise they don't provide advance payment.

I hope you will find a best apartment. If you need any other information you can ask me anytime.

Kind regards,

Dhruvi Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The email addresses all three requested points and maintains a friendly, appropriate tone. You describe your former apartment and give relevant reasons for recommending it, including its location, services, meals, and affordability. You also provide a specific way to contact the landlord and warn your friend to inspect the property, check how many people share it, and clarify which bills are included. These details make the advice useful and support your recommendations. To develop the response further, explain more clearly how your friend should search and compare options, rather than focusing mainly on one apartment and its contact details. The warning about paying advance rent is also unclear, so state precisely when it is safe to pay and what should be confirmed first.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The message is organised into clear paragraphs: congratulations and purpose, your accommodation experience, a recommendation, and warnings. This gives the reader a logical progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Additionally,” and “Firstly” help signal how details relate. The email also has an appropriate opening and closing. At times, however, the connectors are used in a list-like way, particularly in the description of the apartment, where several sentences begin with “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Additionally.” The final warning also moves between checking details and paying rent without a fully clear sequence. Use fewer repeated signposts and make the order of actions explicit—for example, inspect, confirm the terms in writing, then pay—so the advice flows more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main advice, including relevant terms such as “accommodation,” “well maintained,” “commute,” and “utility bills.” The language is generally understandable, but noticeable word-choice, collocation, spelling, and word-form errors reduce precision. Examples include “congratulation” for “congratulations,” “advice” where the verb “advise” is needed, “threw website” for “through the website,” and “conform” where “confirm” is intended. Phrases such as “a good think” and “fit in your budget” are also unnatural in this context. Build accuracy by learning common word partnerships for housing and checking spelling and word forms; this will make your otherwise relevant vocabulary sound more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I think it is a good place for you because…” and “When you conform all the things after that pay the advance rent.” The meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to affect fluency. For example, “I hope you doing well” needs an auxiliary, “it’s only takes fifteen minutes” combines incompatible verb forms, and “when they choosing accommodation” needs a finite verb form. The sentence beginning “What is a good think about this apartment” is also structurally unclear. Practise accurate basic clauses first, then connect them with subordinate clauses; check each sentence for a subject, a correctly formed verb, and clear punctuation.
