Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sam,
How are you? I'm glad, you have been selected to get admssion in the best program at Brock university. For being the ex student at Brock, I'll give you the best advice about accommodation.
In my prime time, I used to live in a flat named catharines, which was five minutes away from the university. I believe that it is an excellent place as it is budget friendly, owners are very kind and always ready to help during tough times.
I would like to suggest you to look at the university website, where you will find the hostel and flats options. I would recommend to choose the flat option because this option ensure the safety and freedom.
I want to give you warnings about residing away from home. You'll meet all kinds of people such as good and bad one's but it is your responsibility to stay away from the bad habits and bad people especially who have sustance addiction. I have some of my friends still studying there and I would love to refer your space in their flat without any doubt.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Take care.
Yours truly,
Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points in a friendly, appropriate email. You describe living in a flat five minutes from the university, recommend checking the university website and choosing a flat, and warn Sam about negative influences, including people with substance addictions. The offer to connect Sam with your friends also makes the advice personal and useful. Some points, however, are less fully developed: explain what to check on the website or how to compare listings, and make the accommodation warning more specific by mentioning practical risks such as unclear costs, poor maintenance, or signing before viewing. The advice is relevant, but a little more detail and explanation would make it more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The email has a clear overall structure: an opening, a paragraph about your former accommodation, advice on searching, a warning, and a closing. This makes the main points easy to locate, and phrases such as “I would like to suggest” and “I want to give you warnings” signal the purpose of each section. The progression is generally logical, though the warning paragraph shifts from living away from home to bad influences and then to your offer of a room, so these ideas could be linked more smoothly or separated. Some transitions are formulaic, and “this option” repeats the previous reference without adding much cohesion. More precise linking and clearer connections between advice and examples would strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main advice, including “budget friendly,” “safety and freedom,” and “substance addiction.” The friendly tone is suitable for writing to a friend, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “get admission,” “prime time,” “refer your space,” and “bad one’s.” There are also spelling errors, including “admssion” and “sustance,” which reduce the impression of control. Aim for more natural accommodation-related expressions, such as “secure a place on the course,” “when I was a student,” and “recommend you for a room.” Check spelling and apostrophes carefully, especially in common phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For example, “I used to live in a flat … which was five minutes away” combines a main clause with a relative clause, while “where you will find…” adds detail to your recommendation. Some grammatical errors remain, including the comma in “I’m glad, you have been selected,” the missing article in “at Brock university,” and the agreement error in “this option ensure.” The construction “I would recommend to choose” also needs a different pattern: “I would recommend choosing.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement, and verb patterns, while continuing to use complex sentences. These corrections would make the email more consistently accurate.
