Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that the present era is the best time period in history to be living. In my opinion, it is indeed the most favourable time due to globalization. This essay will explain my opinion and discuss another historical period that I find particularly interesting.

Discussing my view on present is best time to live, Firstly advancement in technology. For instance Artificial intelligence, this innovation in technology make a huge impact on everyone's life. It has reduced the workload in medical branch, by assisting doctors with disease diagnosis, analysing medical reports and managing patient records. Secondly, in recent years education system has changed dramatically. By this I mean that previously people used to learn from blackboard but now a student can get big screen projectors for studies. Additionally, nowadays people have access to a wide range of transportation option compared to the past. Such as metros a bullet train. This facilities make present better to be living.

Discussing the other time in history that would be interesting, I believe the 1990s would be good to live. In this time people life would be simple and easier. They not only performe household chores by themselves but also built their hobbies together such as pottery, wooden carvings and embroidered clothes. Moreover people spent more time with family and friends. For instance In 90s individuals used to come together at one place to watch "Mahabharat" like mythological show because only few people have had televisions at their home.

To conclude, although several historical periods were fascinating, I believe the modern era offers the highest quality of life. However living during the 90s would have provided a familiar atmosphere and simple living.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the opinion on the present era and the choice of another historical period. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of AI in medicine and the simplicity of the 1990s. However, the development is somewhat limited. The arguments regarding the present are brief, and the explanation of the 1990s relies on generalisations rather than specific, well-supported examples. While the position is clear, the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6, as the ideas are presented but not fully extended or explored in detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Additionally', 'To conclude'). Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'By this I mean that previously people used to learn from blackboard', where the connection to the previous sentence is slightly awkward. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'globalization', 'Artificial intelligence', and 'diagnosis'. However, the range is limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choice, such as 'medical branch' instead of 'medical field' and 'this facilities' instead of 'these facilities'. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('this innovation... make a huge impact'), article misuse ('the 90s' vs 'in 90s'), and tense inconsistencies ('few people have had televisions'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the response, although they do not significantly impede communication. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would improve the score.
