Student answer (Band 7.0)

To be alive in this time is one of the best things a human can ask for. In this contemporary society, humans have better access to food, medicine and lifestyle compared to their ancestors, making it the best time in the history of the world. I agree with the statement that this century and era is the best to live in. However, if given a chance, I would love to live in the cretaceous period along dinosaurs.

To begin with, living in this time and age is the best lifestyle a human being can ask for. This can be attributed to the fact that the modern civilization has better resources and technology improving the living conditions and lifespan. For instance, people can extend their life expectancy by receiving medical treatments which was limited in the past. Moreover, technological advancements have made it possible for people to live a longer and healthier lifestyle. This has led to population increase and decrease in mortality rate across the world.

Conversely, If I have a chance to live in another timeline I would choose the cretaceous period because this era was flourishing with dinosaurs and it has been my fantasy since childhood to see dinosaurs. A few years ago, I visited a dinosaur museum which made me even more fascinated about this extinct creature. I would go in this era to see how these giant creature lived and interacted with their environment. For instance, I will live my life without any modern day stress and gain knowledge about these wonderful creatures. Therefore, this time travel with help the scientists and schoolers to gain in-depth knowledge about earth's history and their demise. I choose this period because it will be free of human beings and anthropogenic calamities.

In conclusion, modern advancements have made life of people easier due to the presence of facilities such as medicine, abundance food and resources making the human beings the apex predator in the world. Moreover, people have more rights and freedom to live without discrimination and bias making the modern civilization epitome of living standards.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the opinion on the current era and the choice of a historical period. The position is clear throughout. The arguments regarding modern advancements (medicine, technology) are well-developed. The second part regarding the Cretaceous period is also relevant, though the connection to 'scientists and schoolers' is slightly tangential to the personal preference aspect. Overall, the ideas are extended and supported, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced analysis of the 'best time' argument, perhaps acknowledging potential drawbacks to modern life to create a more balanced and sophisticated discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Conversely', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the transition between the dinosaur museum visit and the scientific benefit of time travel is slightly abrupt. The use of cohesive devices is generally flexible, though some phrasing feels a bit mechanical. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'contemporary society', 'life expectancy', and 'anthropogenic calamities' show an attempt to use less common items. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'schoolers' (should be 'scholars') and 'abundance food' (should be 'abundant food'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and shows a good level of awareness regarding topic-specific terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, but there are recurring errors that prevent a higher score. Examples include 'along dinosaurs' (should be 'alongside dinosaurs'), 'If I have a chance' (should be 'If I had a chance' - conditional error), and 'this time travel with help' (should be 'will help'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should focus on consistent use of verb tenses in conditional sentences and ensure subject-verb agreement is maintained throughout.
