Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is said that, human birth is gained after surpassing 840,000 lives as other creatures on planet. Although if I would have got an opportunity to decide, I would have still chosen to be in this era. While other set of people believe there could have been a better time to be in. This essay will shed light on both views with explanation for same.

To commence with, I believe it is a privilege to be born in this generation because of the availability of facilities we have now. Firstly, technology has bestowed humans with internet. Everything is available on our fingertips, be it shopping online or conveniently working or studying at ease by sitting at your home with just a computer or a cell phone and an internet connection. To exemplify, people would not send their children for studying to cities because of lack of colleges in rural communities, but now the same students can gain world class knowledge from anywhere.

Secondly, medical facilities we have now, like never before. there is treatment for almost every disease on the planet, even if not modern day scientists are able to create vaccine's in a short period of time. for instance Covid-19 which was a global pandemic, scientists were able to create a vaccine for the same within months while small pox in 2008 ended up killing millions of people for years without any relevant treatment.

To pondure upon, I firmly believe living in this contemporary world is the only thing I could ever ask for, while there are some people who would prefer living in a different generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the first part of the prompt regarding the current era well, providing relevant examples like technology and medical advancements. However, the second part of the prompt—'What other time in history would be interesting to live in?'—is completely ignored. The essay fails to discuss any alternative historical period, which is a significant omission. To reach a higher band, you must ensure all parts of the multi-part question are answered. The introduction is also slightly off-topic with the mention of '840,000 lives,' which does not contribute to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'To commence with,' 'Firstly,' and 'Secondly' to signal your points. However, the transitions between ideas are sometimes mechanical, and the concluding paragraph is very brief and fails to summarize the main points effectively. The logical progression is interrupted by the lack of a response to the second part of the prompt, making the overall flow feel incomplete. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a more balanced structure would improve this score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary world,' 'privilege,' and 'global pandemic.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'human birth is gained' and 'pondure upon' (likely a misspelling of 'ponder'). Additionally, there are minor errors in pluralization and punctuation, such as 'vaccine's' (should be 'vaccines'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, you need to use more precise and varied language to move into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the internet'), subject-verb agreement, and punctuation (e.g., 'there is treatment...'). Some sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'Everything is available on our fingertips, be it shopping online or conveniently working or studying at ease by sitting at your home.' These errors are noticeable but do not generally impede communication. To improve, focus on sentence boundary control and consistent use of articles and plural forms.
