Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, this a growing debate that the best time to live in history is the present time. People have different opinions on this and I will discuss my views in upcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, in my opinion, the world is developing at a very fast pace and it has plenty of advantages. The progress in the field of technology has made the lifestyle of individuals way easier compared to past. With the introduction of artificial intelligence, people can complete their work very easily, as it helps a lot. Moreover, internet connects everyone around the world, as a result, humans are getting more exposure to the world. We can get all the information of any event, place, product from internet. The advancement in the transportation sector has made it easier and more reliable to travel anywhere on the earth.

In addition, there are many other time periods which looks fascinating and good to live, but I will prefer to in the late 18th century. I have got to know about this era that how citizens used to do all the work on their own, this has developed distinct skills in them. There were no machines, so they have to work manually which made them fit and they lived healthy life. Furthermore, people never used pesticides, fertilizers and other harmful chemicals for farming, as a result they always got best quality, organic food, which made their health even better.

In conclusion, I believe that every era has their pros and cons and we should appreciate and respect everything that we are getting today. With the passage of time, everything changes and that can cause some disadvantages also.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the opinion on the present day and the choice of another historical era. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the benefits of the present are mentioned (AI, internet, transport), the explanation remains superficial. Similarly, the discussion of the 18th century relies on generalisations about health and manual labor without specific historical context or deeper analysis. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed examples and a more nuanced exploration of why these periods are significant, rather than listing general advantages or disadvantages.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'In addition'. However, some transitions feel mechanical or slightly repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. The conclusion is a bit brief and does not fully synthesise the arguments presented in the body paragraphs, but the overall progression of ideas remains easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You use common phrases like 'way easier', 'helps a lot', and 'good to live', which are somewhat informal or imprecise. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary such as 'artificial intelligence', 'pesticides', and 'fertilizers', which is positive. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and academic vocabulary to express your ideas more precisely, rather than relying on general-purpose words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'this a growing debate' (missing verb), 'looks fascinating' (subject-verb agreement), and 'they have to work' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences where better use of commas or conjunctions would improve clarity. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips.
