Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that current time is one of the best period in history to be living. In my opinion, there is numerous positive reasons which will be discussed in the following paragraphs. However, I believe that future period would be more interesting.

One of the main reasons why present time is the best for people is that it has access of social media and smartphones. This is because social platforms allow users to connect to their family and friends. Nowadays, youngsters travel abroad for their higher education, but they often suffer from loneliness. The internet gives them access to contact their family members at any time. Furthermore, smart devices also give access to play online games and provide abundant learning resources. As a consequence, the young generation may follow their gaming profession and earn money from there as well as they can improve their skills from technological advancement. Overall, modern equipment helps children for their career growth.

Future life can be the more excited for human beings because of the technological growth. To begin with, scientist has predicted that future vehicles could start flying without any fuel consumption. Consequently, that would not only be time-efficient but also energy-efficient, which could be beneficial for both individuals and the environment. Moreover, many people presume that they could virtually connect with their families and that virtual games will be more realistic. Therefore, future predictors are more thrilled about future era.

In conclusion, although the current period is one of the best times for livelihood, the coming years will be more surprising in terms of technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the opinion on the current era and the choice of a future time. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding social media and gaming is a bit repetitive and lacks depth in explaining why this makes the current time the 'best' in history. The second part of the prompt regarding the future is also somewhat speculative and could have been supported with more concrete reasoning. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more detailed explanations and specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'To begin with', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though there are minor issues with flow between sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is logical, moving from the present to the future. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would help the essay flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'technological advancement' and 'time-efficient'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'future period' instead of 'the future' and 'future predictors' which is not the standard term for people who speculate about the future. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more precise and varied vocabulary would elevate the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('current time', 'future period') and subject-verb agreement ('scientist has predicted' instead of 'scientists have predicted'). There are also minor errors in pluralization, such as 'numerous positive reasons' (which is grammatically acceptable but 'a number of' is more natural) and 'best period' instead of 'best periods'. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
