Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is considered by numerous people that current era is the ideal era for living. In this essay, I will share my opinion and also mention other feasible era for living.

In this pioneer era, technology made a person's life so easy and convenient. For instance, with the help of electronic devices household work can be done quickly and more efficiently without investing manpower. It not only save energy but also save time. In contrast, previous era where every tasks can be completed by women manually.

In my opinion on the one hand, advancement helps a person in various aspects of life but on the other hand, it made a person lazy and unhealthy. For instance, a person use his automobile even to travel for a short distance rather to go by walk hence, this habit triggers certain medical related issues such as overweight, hypertension, diabetes. However, in last decades many people prefer to do exercises including running, walking that keep them fit and active. Additionally, increased roads congestion also has some detrimental effects on a person's life. Consequently, air pollution that results from the burning fuel of transports effect person physical as well as mental health. For instance, it not only cause stress but also has negative effect on his respiratory system.

As far as other era is concerned, I would say the ancient Roman civilization was the best time to live. Although, at that time facilities were not available but instead of it the quality of life was much better than the current era. People at that time lived more than the present time because they ate healthy food. In addition to this, they did physical exercises instead of relaying on electronic machines.

In a nutshell, although technology made a person's life more comfortable and luxurious but, it also pushes a person towards certain medical issues. Therefore to live a happy and a long life a person should adopt discipline in his life and also do some physical activities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the opinion on whether the current era is the best, and the suggestion of an alternative historical period. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The discussion on the current era is well-supported with examples regarding technology and health, but the section on the Roman civilization is less developed, relying on generalizations about diet and exercise rather than specific historical context. The position is clear throughout, but the argument could be strengthened by providing more nuanced evidence for the alternative era chosen.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'On the one hand', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the transition between the discussion of modern health issues and the Roman civilization is quite sudden. Referencing is generally clear, but the use of pronouns and linking words could be more varied to improve the overall flow and readability of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'detrimental', 'manpower', and 'convenient'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'pioneer era' (likely meant 'modern era') and 'burning fuel of transports'. Additionally, there is some repetition of basic terms like 'person's life' and 'era'. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of synonyms to avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the current era', 'the ancient Roman civilization'), subject-verb agreement ('every tasks can be completed'), and pluralization ('effect person physical'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'instead of it the quality of life was much better'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammar and refining complex sentence construction would significantly improve the score.
