Student answer (Band 6.5)

Throughout history, people have experienced different living conditions, opportunities and challenges. Although every period has its own challenges,I believe that the current era is the best time to live in because of healthcare, technology advancement and education. However, if I had the opportunity to live in another historical period, I would choose the Renaissance because of its remarkable culture and scientific developments.

In my opinion, the present day in the history is the best time to live. One of the main reasons is the remarkable progress in various fields such as technology, healthcare and education. People have options now to do things effectively through modern facilities. For example, nowadays students education has became much easier and more convenient than it was in the back days. Children can use technology, connect with other students and teachers to find a solution. In addition, most people enjoy comforts that were unavailable even to wealthy individuals centuries ago such as transportation, instant communication.

Nevertheless, If I could experience another period in history, I would choose the Renaissance. This era has an extraordinary achievements in art, science and Literature. The eminent people like Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo made significant contributions that continue to inspire many people today. Although, living in such era is not comfortable than they are now, the opportunity and seeing tremendous achievements is extremely rewarding. People during that time eat healthy food and are more fit than the current period. As the technology is growing, people are facing several problems as well such as anxiety, obesity etc.

In conclusion, I believe that the modern era is the most desirable time to live due to advances in helathcare, technology and living standards. However, the Renaissance would be interesting period to experience because of its exceptional achievements in different fields.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed both parts of the prompt clearly, providing a balanced argument for why the present is the best time to live and identifying the Renaissance as an interesting alternative. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. While your ideas are relevant, some points could be further extended; for instance, the comparison regarding health and fitness between the Renaissance and the modern era is a good observation but lacks specific evidence to fully support the claim. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task well, ensuring all parts of the prompt are covered with a clear, logical progression of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion' to link your ideas effectively. However, there are instances where the flow could be smoother; for example, the transition between the benefits of the modern era and the shift to the Renaissance could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main ideas. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor mechanical errors in punctuation slightly affect the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'remarkable progress', 'extraordinary achievements', and 'eminent'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'helathcare' and 'in the back days', which is an unnatural idiom. You attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, which is positive, but there is room to improve precision and collocation to reach a higher band. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the consistent flexibility and naturalness required for a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully employ complex sentences, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'students education has became' (should be 'students' education has become') and 'living in such era is not comfortable than they are now' (should be 'is not as comfortable as it is now'). Punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and periods, are also present. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and comparative structures will help improve your accuracy.
