Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the opinion on the present day and the selection of another historical period. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the advantages of modern life are supported with examples like medical advancements and global connectivity, the discussion regarding the 1900s is less focused. The mention of the 'space race' and 'world wars' is relevant, but the connection to why it would be 'interesting' to live in is slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure that the second part of the prompt receives equal depth of analysis and specific justification as the first part.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'After that the computer and smartphones came into existence.' Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within the second body paragraph could be tighter to better link the historical context to the personal interest expressed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'infrastructure' and 'technological transformation'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'excess to their desire location' (access to their desired location) and 'Technical equipements' (technical equipment). Additionally, 'leads to make' is grammatically and lexically awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word usage and attention to word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('equipements plays', 'human starts', 'they can remains') and article usage. Some sentences are also structurally incomplete or awkward, such as 'infrastructure leads to make living standards better'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on basic subject-verb agreement and proofreading for common slips in tense and pluralization.
