Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the opinion on the current era and the selection of a historical period. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on the 18th and 19th centuries is quite general, focusing on broad concepts like 'steam machines' and 'farming' without specific historical context or deeper analysis. While the main points are relevant, they lack the depth required for a higher band score. The introduction is slightly awkward in its phrasing, which impacts the clarity of the initial position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition to that', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'Thus, connectivity is become easier'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. While the overall structure is coherent, the use of cohesive devices is not always flexible or sophisticated, which keeps the response at a mid-level band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'life expectancy', 'modernization phase', and 'automated machines'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'recent time' instead of 'modern era', 'oversees' instead of 'overseas', and 'countable seconds' instead of 'a matter of seconds'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited range and a lack of precision in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'connectivity is become easier', 'as having vacations' (likely meant 'vaccinations'), and 'would best era'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is high enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the punctuation is occasionally used incorrectly, which affects the overall accuracy.
