Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people argue that it is currently the best time to be living in comparison to the past. I completely agree with that and I would like to make my arguments in favour of this opinion in this essay.

Firstly, if we compare the current time to the history, the crime rate is the lowest currently. Though, we might not have statistics from ancient period, but the margins are so huge, that you don't need to look at the numbers. If you look at heinous crimes like murder, rape or kidnapping, in previous times it was pretty common and people could go unscathed even after committing such crimes. But in todays world, there is a significant higher chance of getting caught. That has made the world much safer place to live in.

Secondly, women have many more rights in comparison to women from previous periods. Earlier women were bound to kitchen work, did not have any voting rights, faced a lot of discrimination at work places. For example, they could not work as a pilot or enrol in the army because they were considered weak. In modern world, things have become much easier for them, however I would not say that it is perfect and I believe there is still a lot of scope for improvement.

That being said, I think there were certain periods in history which might be quite interesting to live in. Like the period, when India was considered a golden bird, because we used to have an amazing education system, agriculture and vast spice market. There was prosperity everywhere and I think it will be a great experience to live in that period.

In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that the current time is the most amazing and the safest time for humans due to not only the safety reasons but because people from all race, castes and religions have better opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: the opinion on the current era and the selection of an interesting historical period. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding crime rates relies on generalisations rather than specific evidence, and the historical example of India as a 'golden bird' is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of why it would be 'interesting' to live there. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed explanations and concrete examples to support your claims, ensuring that the connection between your arguments and the prompt is more robust.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' effectively. However, the transitions between some sentences are a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences within paragraphs is smoother, rather than relying on a simple list-like structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'heinous crimes', 'discrimination', and 'prosperity'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'bound to kitchen work' (should be 'confined to') and 'significant higher chance' (should be 'significantly higher'). To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to convey your points with greater nuance and sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('in ancient period', 'in modern world') and minor punctuation issues. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'I would like to make my arguments in favour of this opinion'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching the higher bands where error-free complex structures are more frequent. Focus on proofreading for articles and prepositions to improve your accuracy.
