Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been argued by some individuals that current period is the best time for living as compared to the past. Although I strongly agree with this aspect, there had been other interesting eras in the history that could be lived.

The primary reason to state this time better than older times is the availability of the technology in several fields. The modern technology has led to the advancement across the fields such as education, health care, communication and travelling. For instance, using the projectors in the school enable the students to understand the particular concept more conveniently by watching videos. Secondly, communication has become lot more easier globally with the invention of gadgets like smartphones, laptops. Furthermore, the invention of planes and motor cars has contributed a lot in travelling as it is a time saving process.

However, the advancement of the technology has also led to fast-paced world which is one the main reason for increase of stress and other mental issues in the society. Along with the basic needs of the families, people are attracted to the unnecessary things such as buying expensive clothes, gadgets which can cost the financial stability of the families. If ever get a chance, I would like to live in past times when only basic needs were prioritized like food, clothes and shelter. For instance, the times when survival of the fittest is referred to. People were mainly hunting for their food and there were no harmful diseases because of the pollution.

In conclusion, although current time is best time to live on this planet because of the technology across the fields, it also leads to various harmful diseases and mental stress in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the current era and an alternative historical period. The position is clear, and the arguments regarding technology are relevant. However, the development of the second part of the prompt is somewhat weak. The mention of 'survival of the fittest' and 'hunting' is a bit vague and lacks specific historical context or depth. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete examples of a specific historical era (e.g., the Renaissance or the Industrial Revolution) and explain why it would be interesting to live in that specific time, rather than relying on generalisations about 'past times'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the benefits of technology and the drawbacks could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'If ever get a chance', which lacks a subject. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that every sentence flows naturally from the previous one will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advancement', 'financial stability', and 'prioritized'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'lot more easier' is grammatically incorrect (should be 'much easier'), and 'live on this planet' is slightly unnatural in this context. You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but the precision is inconsistent. To improve, focus on learning collocations—words that naturally go together—and avoid repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary related to history and technology would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('current period' should be 'the current period'), subject-verb agreement issues ('there had been other interesting eras'), and awkward phrasing ('one the main reason'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on proofreading for basic errors like missing articles and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately.
