Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is widely believed that the present time is the best time for enjoying human life. While modern lifestyle has numerous advantages, I believe that living in 1900s would be interesting due to slow-paced lifestyle and healthier communities.

The most compelling reason for considering the current time as the best phase in the history is the benefits of the globalisation. Due to the international trades, nations depend on each other heavily which has led to improved relationships. Ultimately, the world has become more peaceful as compare to past times. Thus, people feel safer and respect other cultures which reduce war-like situations. Moreover, due to the advanced technology, the standard of living has improved as better educational, employment and transportation facilities in every area has made human life quite comfortable. For example, people who live in countryside areas can enjoy the nature while embracing the modern lifestyle as they can easily travel to metropolitan cities by using transportation facilities. Therefore, the society members are experiencing the facilities of both time periods.

On the other hand, the life in the previous century must have been more interesting. It was the time when there were small communities living together peacefully as it was difficult to travel from one place to another in less time. Due to this, they shared stronger bonding and lived less stressful life. In these days, the competition has increased which results in a hectic schedule of working people. Therefore, they do not have enough time to spend with their family members. Furthermore, the excessive workload at sitting jobs deteriorates the physiological and psychological health of people in the contemporary world. In contrast, the jobs in 1900s were physically demanding which led to healthier lifestyle in the society. For example, the farmers could allocate more time to family because of less burden and stay fit and healthy due to working hard. As a result, mostly people lived a way better life than today's time.

In conclusion, although the modern time has a positive impact on people's life, I opine that the communities in past century must be happier than today's society members. This is because of emotional support from family members and healthier life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the current era and a historical alternative. The position is clear throughout. The arguments regarding the benefits of globalization and technology are well-developed, as is the counter-argument regarding the social and health benefits of the 1900s. However, the development is slightly uneven; the comparison between the two eras could be more nuanced. For instance, the claim that people in the 1900s were universally 'happier' is a broad generalization that could be better supported with more specific historical context. Overall, the task is fully addressed with relevant ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'The most compelling reason', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow; for example, the transition between the benefits of globalization and the mention of 'war-like situations' is slightly abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some flexibility. There are attempts to use less common items like 'globalisation', 'metropolitan', and 'physiological'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'as compare to past times' (should be 'compared to') and 'society members' (a bit unnatural). While the range is adequate for the task, the vocabulary lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score. The errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, but there are persistent errors in articles and prepositions, such as 'the life in the previous century' (should be 'life in the previous century') and 'in these days' (should be 'these days'). Some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'mostly people lived a way better life'. While complex structures are attempted, they are not always error-free. However, these errors are minor and do not cause difficulty for the reader.
