Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some people argue that present time is the best in history so far. Although the Renaissance was one of the interesting time in the history, I agree that modern time is the best because it has the greatest amounts of convenience, freedom and advancements of all times.
There has been significant changes in the lifestyle over different ages. The convenience and freedom we experience now, was never availaible in the past. This is because of change in people's thinking, which has become sophisticated enough to allow everyone to live on their own terms. The nations have become democratic and individuals nhave freedom of speech, expression and religion. However, in the past people have witnessed cruelty of rulers, restrictions on their freedom and compulsions to follow specific religion. Furthermore, advances in the sceince and technology have revolutionized almost all aspects of life. For example, medicine inventions have increased longitivity and reduced infant mortality rate significantly. Such breakthrough innovations have positively transformed our lives beyond imagination. Therefore, it can be inferred that now is the best time in history to be alive.
Nevertheless, if one has to choose from the history, the Renaissance period, would have been an interesting time to live in. It was a major cultural and historic period in Europe that marked the transition from Middle Ages to modernity. The word 'Renainssance' means rebirth, it started in the 14th century in Italy and spread accross rest of the Europe through 17th century, reviving Ancient Greek and Roman art and literature. It spread the focus from religion to humanism, and promoted the idea of 'Renaissance man' an individual who was skilled in arts, science and literature. Leonardo Da Vinci and Columbus are among the famous historic figures from that time.
In conclusion, while the Renaissance period was one of the most interesting times in the history, I believe that modern time is the best to be living in because of the convenience, freedom and advancements it offers to the mankind.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate successfully addresses all parts of the two-part prompt. The response presents a clear position regarding whether the present is the best time in history to live, supporting it with relevant points such as increased convenience, democratic freedom, and technological advancements. Additionally, the essay thoughtfully considers another interesting historical period, the Renaissance, fulfilling the second part of the prompt. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as reference to the Renaissance man, Leonardo Da Vinci, and medical advancements. The response demonstrates a well-developed argument, showing strong task response. While the first paragraph contains a slight phrasing inaccuracy ("one of the interesting time"), the overall development of ideas aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organization throughout. It is divided into logical paragraphs with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each part of the prompt, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as "This is because of", "However", "Furthermore", and "Nevertheless". However, there are minor cohesion and referencing flaws, such as the slightly mechanical transition in "Nevertheless, if one has to choose from the history", which place the response firmly within the Band 7 range.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully using less common and topic-specific items such as "sophisticated", "advancements", "longevity", "infant mortality rate", "humanism", and "transition". There are some minor lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as "present time" instead of "the present time", "greatest amounts of convenience", and spelling slips like "availaible", "nhave", "sceince", and "accross". Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile, comfortably earning a 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a willingness to experiment with varied structures like conditional and concessive clauses. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including article omissions ("the Renaissance was one of the interesting time in the history", "choose from the history"), incorrect plurals/uncountable handling ("significant changes", "medical inventions"), and a comma splice in the conclusion. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of sentences are constructed adequately. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
