Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people argue that the present time is the best in history so far. Although the Renaissance was one of the most interesting times in the history, I agree that modern times are the best because it has the greatest amounts of convenience, freedom and advancements of all times.

There have been significant changes in lifestyle over different ages. The convenience and freedom we experience now were never available in the past. This is because of a change in people's thinking due to education and modernization. The nations have become democratic and citizens have freedom of speech, expression and religion. However, in the past people have witnessed cruelty of rulers, restrictions on their freedom and compulsions to follow a specific religion. Furthermore, advances in science and technology have revolutionized almost all aspects of life. For example, medicinal inventions have increased longevity and reduced infant mortality rate significantly. Such breakthrough innovations have positively transformed our lives beyond imagination. Therefore, it can be inferred that now is the best time in history to be alive.

Nevertheless, if one has to choose from history, the Renaissance period would have been an interesting time to live in. It was a major cultural and historic period in Europe that marked the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity. The word 'Renaissance' means rebirth, and it started in the 14th century in Italy and spread across the rest of the Europe through the 17th century, reviving Ancient Greek and Roman art and literature. It spread the focus from religion to humanism, and promoted the idea of 'Renaissance man,' an individual who was skilled in arts, science and literature. Leonardo Da Vinci and Columbus are among the famous historic figures from that time.

In conclusion, while the Renaissance period was one of the most interesting times in the history, I believe that the present time is the best to be living in because of the convenience, freedom and advancements it offers to mankind.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the two-part prompt. The student clearly states their opinion that the present day is the best time in history to live due to convenience, freedom, and advancements, and supports this with relevant arguments regarding democratization, technology, and medicine. Furthermore, the writer selects the Renaissance period as an interesting alternative historical era and provides valid, well-developed reasons for this choice, mentioning figures such as Leonardo Da Vinci and cultural shifts towards humanism. The position is maintained clearly throughout, and ideas are extended and supported effectively, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into appropriate paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs addressing each part of the prompt respectively, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'This is because', 'Furthermore', 'Therefore', and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the logical flow of ideas from modern advantages to the historical alternative. Referencing is generally clear throughout the text, matching the expectations of a Band 7.0 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to the task. Words and phrases such as 'convenience', 'advancements', 'democratization', 'infant mortality rate', 'transition', and 'humanism' show a sufficient range for flexibility and precision. There are occasional slight lexical inaccuracies, such as writing 'the history' instead of 'history' in the opening and closing paragraphs, and 'the rest of the Europe', but these errors do not impede communication. The use of less common items demonstrates an awareness of style and topic-specific vocabulary, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although the Renaissance was one of the most interesting times...', 'if one has to choose from history...'). There is a good degree of grammatical control and punctuation use overall, though a few minor errors occur, such as subject-verb agreement or article usage ('it has the greatest amounts', 'over the Europe'). However, the majority of sentences are error-free, and these minor slips do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 7.0 range.
