Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many individuals believe that the present time is one of the best time in history. I believe that earlier days where much better as compared to the days we are living in today because people had a simple lifetstyle and were more connected to eachother than they are today. However, what would be more exiciting to see in the future is less comparision and more compassion for everyone.

In the earlier days, people were more attached to their loved ones even withouth the advancement of technology. Today even tough we can connect to people anytime and anyhwere with the development of technology such as mobile phone, the human touch is still missing which does not help to foster better bonds with friends and family. In old days people led a simple life away from social media which helped in leading a good life. This is to say that current generation is highly influeneced by social media, due to which their actions are only centered to impress their followers and achieve a sense of belonging. For example, a friend of mine would not see his family for the whole year but would go over for thanksgiving dinner just to create a moment which he could post on his Instagram page.

In the upcoming future, I expect people, not to compare themselves with eachother but be more compassionate. This is because in today's society people comapre their financial standings with others, this develops a factor of jealousy in them and causes rifts in relationship. For instance, between two friends if one earns better than the other the relationship wont last longer. I believe that there should be a place where everyone is equal and a society which is free from stereo types like rich and poor.

In conclusion, better connection and bonds needs human touch and the future should be such that everyone gets equal treatment to avoid fights and feeling of hatered.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses both parts of the prompt: giving an opinion on whether the present is the best time to live, and discussing an alternative historical period (though interestingly, the student interprets the second part as looking into the future rather than the past, writing 'what would be more exiciting to see in the future'). A clear position is presented throughout the essay, arguing that earlier days were better due to simpler lifestyles. However, the development of ideas tends to be limited and slightly repetitive, focusing heavily on social media and financial comparison without fully expanding the historical aspect requested. For instance, the reference to a friend going home for Thanksgiving solely for an Instagram photo is a relevant example, but the argument could have been extended further. Overall, the task is addressed, but the interpretation of 'another time in history' as the future slightly misinterprets the prompt, leading to a Band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is organized into four distinct paragraphs with a clear overall progression from the introduction, through body paragraphs discussing past/current social media issues and future expectations, to a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However', 'In the earlier days', 'Today even tough', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the text. However, some referencing is slightly faulty or mechanical, and paragraphing could be improved; for instance, the integration of future expectations in the third paragraph slightly disrupts the thematic flow. Furthermore, minor typographical errors in transition phrases like 'even tough' impact the seamlessness of the cohesion. Despite these minor flaws, the essay maintains a coherent overall arrangement that justifies a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'advancement of technology', 'foster better bonds', 'influeneced', and 'compassionate'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'lifetstyle' instead of 'lifestyle', 'eachother' instead of 'each other', 'exiciting', 'comapre', 'stereo types', and 'hatered'. While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes do not completely impede communication, they restrict the score. The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey simple and complex ideas, but lacks the precision and control required for higher bands, placing this response firmly at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating clauses such as 'due to which their actions are only centered' and 'between two friends if one earns better than the other the relationship wont last longer'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, such as missing commas in complex sentences, subject-verb agreement issues ('better connection and bonds needs human touch'), and spelling-related grammatical confusion. Despite these errors, the sentences are generally understandable and communication is rarely impeded. The command of grammar demonstrates a reasonable attempt at complex structures alongside basic errors, corresponding closely to the Band 6.0 descriptors.
