Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement, containing only 154 words instead of the required 250. This severely impacts task achievement, as the ideas are significantly under-developed. While the student attempts to answer the first part of the prompt by discussing why modern times are advantageous (mentioning medical science, clean water, and technology), the second part of the prompt—asking what other time in history would be interesting to live in—is completely ignored. The position is stated in the introduction with 'I strong believe', but the lack of completion regarding the historical alternative keeps this criterion firmly at a lower band level. To improve, the writer must ensure all parts of the prompt are addressed and develop their ideas fully to meet the word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows a basic attempt at organisation, using cohesive phrases such as 'To begin with', 'First and foremost', and 'On the other hand'. However, the paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the text is divided into an introduction and two body paragraphs, but the second body paragraph abruptly shifts to technology and trails off abruptly. Progression is hindered by the extremely short length and lack of a conclusion. Referencing is generally clear, but cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or repetitive. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to ensure logical development across a greater number of well-structured paragraphs and include a concluding summary.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and basic. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'extraordinarily', 'knowledgeable', and 'nutritious', but encounters frequent errors in word choice, morphology, and collocation. For instance, the phrase 'I strong believe' lacks the adverbial form, 'death diseases' is unnatural compared to fatal diseases, and 'longer and healthy life' contains a grammatical clash in adjectives. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the vocabulary range is restricted and insufficient to convey precise meaning flexibly. Incorporating more precise academic or general training vocabulary would greatly enhance this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures alongside a few basic attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'modern society offer' (subject-verb agreement), 'In past which diseases were consider as death diseases' (faulty relative clause and passive voice), and 'Now days' (spelling/phrasing error for nowadays). While these errors rarely completely obscure the writer's meaning, they occur with high frequency and prevent the text from demonstrating good control of grammar. To improve, the writer should practice complex sentence formation, check subject-verb agreement, and review verb tenses when referring to the past.
