Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The candidate has addressed both parts of the prompt, expressing an opinion that the present time is best due to education, healthcare, and technology, while also identifying the 1960s as an interesting alternative period in history. A position is presented throughout the text. However, the ideas are under-developed and lack sufficient supporting examples or depth. For instance, the discussion of the 1960s simply mentions music, clothes, and social changes without elaboration. Additionally, the response suffers from a significant negative impact on Task Achievement due to the length requirement not being met; the text contains only 202 words, falling well short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the development of ideas is restricted, placing this response firmly in Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic structural organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, although paragraph boundaries and internal flow are sometimes awkward due to missing spaces and punctuation errors, such as in 'The commence with, there are many reason'. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, as seen in 'The commence with' instead of 'To commence with' or 'First of all'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and logical progression between sentences lacks smoothness. While there is a discernible overall arrangement, the frequent errors in cohesion and referencing prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making Band 5 an accurate reflection of the student's current control.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'healthcare', 'aesthetic music', and 'unique lifestyle', but these are accompanied by frequent noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling, such as 'recieved', 'acces', 'depen', 'althogh', and 'intrested'. The misuse of word forms like 'improvement education' instead of 'improved education' and 'advanced in healthcare' instead of 'advances in healthcare' demonstrates a restricted control of word building and collocation. Vocabulary is frequently repetitive, particularly around concepts of technology and time periods. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning the response with Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including missing articles ('in healthcare'), subject-verb agreement issues ('people today have aa better acces'), and run-on sentences joined incorrectly by commas ('modern technology people are used smartphones and internet it is very usefull to information'). Punctuation and capitalization are frequently neglected, such as missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and improper spacing after commas. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, the high frequency of basic errors and faulty complex structures means that error-free sentences are rare, which is characteristic of a Band 5 performance.
