Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, some people believe that we are living in the best period in history. I partly agree with this view because modern life provides many advantages, although earlier periods also had some interesting features.
There are several reasons why the present can be considered a good time to live. First of all, modern technology has made our lives much easier and more convenient. For example, people can communicate with family members living in other countries through video calls within seconds. In addition, medical science has developed considerably, and people have access to better treatments and healthcare facilities. Education is also more accessible because students can learn through online courses and digital resources.
However, I would also find it interesting to live during the 1960s. This was an important period of social and technological change. For instance, people experienced major developments in space exploration, including the first human landing on the Moon in 1969. It would have been fascinating to witness such a historic achievement. I would also like to experience the music, fashion and cultural changes of that period.
In conclusion, although every historical period has its own advantages and disadvantages, I believe the present offers many benefits because of technological and medical progress. Nevertheless, the 1960s would be an interesting period to experience because of its remarkable social and scientific developments.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by giving an opinion on whether the present is the best time to live and identifying another interesting historical period, specifically the 1960s. Ideas are supported with relevant examples, such as video calls, medical advancements, and space exploration. However, the response has a noticeable weakness in length: the provided text contains 222 words, which falls short of the mandatory 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the task cannot be fully developed as required, leading to a downward adjustment in the task achievement score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. It uses standard paragraphing effectively, with a clear introduction, separate body paragraphs for the present and the 1960s, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, as seen with phrases like "First of all," "In addition," and "For instance." Although some transitional phrases are somewhat standard, referencing and substitution remain clear throughout, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's arguments without difficulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as "medical science," "healthcare facilities," "digital resources," and "space exploration." While the lexical range is sufficient to convey the argument clearly and with some precision, it lacks the broader flexibility and more sophisticated, uncommon lexical items characteristic of higher bands. Word choice is generally natural, and spelling and word formation are accurate throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate clauses effectively, such as in "people can communicate with family members living in other countries through video calls." Grammatical control is strong, with frequent error-free sentences and accurate punctuation. Errors are extremely rare and do not impede communication in any way. The grammatical accuracy comfortably meets the standard for a higher band, showing solid control over sentence mechanics.
