IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that now is the best time in history to be living.

What is your opinion about this?

What other time in history would be interesting to live in?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People relate that now it is the best time to live in history. I agree with this statement.

Firstly, in the past people rely mostly on natural resources for their survival. They used to cultivate crops themselves and hunt animals. However, now the basic amneties of life are fulfiled with genetic biotechnology which has enabled man to experience mass production of fruits and vegetables. It also has made breeding of livestock very feasible and convenient in a much shorter time.

Another example that relates is the travelling experience. In ancient times, people had to travel on foot or use animals for transport which used to take so many days to reach from one place to another. However, modes of transport have dramatically improved now and travelling has become convenient and safe as well.

Similary, communication was a difficult task to achieve in the past. People mostly used birds like peigons to transfer messages. They worked like a messenger but this used to take many days to reach the desired destination and vice versa. In modern times, now internet has become an integral part of our daily lives and has made communication faster. It also helps people stay connected across the world.

For instance, my graduation ceremony took place during Covid and unfortunately my parents were not able to attend it physically because of the protocol to be followed. So they virtually joined on whatsapp and witnessed the whole ceremony making it memorable.

I believe another time in history that would be intresting to live in was the period of stone age. Although, it was not developed but what makes it intresting is that people started inventing gadgets for their ease.

In conclusion, living in modern times is much more easier than living in the past.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that the present is the best time to live, and you support this with relevant points about food production, transport and communication. The graduation example also makes the benefit of modern communication concrete. You address the second question by choosing the Stone Age, but this idea is much less developed: the claim that people began inventing “gadgets for their ease” is vague and does not explain what would make that period interesting to you. Some comparisons with the past are also broad rather than supported with specific detail. To strengthen the response, explain your personal interest in the Stone Age and develop that point with a clear example, while extending the supporting details for your main opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence: it presents your opinion, gives separate examples of food, travel and communication, then considers another historical period and concludes. Paragraphing helps readers follow these main points, and linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “However” and “For instance” make relationships between ideas clear. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some flexibility in connecting examples. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated contrast between “in the past” and “now.” The Stone Age point also arrives abruptly after the modern example. Use a wider range of transitions and make the connection between each paragraph and your central argument more explicit; clearer development of the final body paragraph would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic and include some relevant terms, such as “genetic biotechnology,” “mass production,” “livestock” and “integral part.” These choices show an attempt to use topic-specific language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “People relate that,” “basic amneties,” “the travelling experience,” and “gadgets for their ease.” Spelling errors such as “fulfiled,” “Similary,” “peigons” and “intresting” also reduce accuracy. The meaning is generally understandable, but more precise and natural phrasing would make the argument clearer. Review common collocations and check spelling carefully, especially for key words that carry your main ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses with “However” and a relative clause in “which has enabled man to experience mass production.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the example about your graduation is expressed in a clear sequence. Some grammatical errors persist, though. For example, “people rely mostly” shifts into the past without a matching tense, while “living in modern times is much more easier” uses an incorrect comparative form. The sentence beginning “Although, it was not developed” is also awkwardly structured, and punctuation is missing after “messages.” Aim for consistent tense when comparing historical periods, and check comparative forms and clause construction. These revisions would improve accuracy while preserving your range of sentence types.
