Student answer (Band 6.0)

Artificial intelligence, flying cars and devices that can allow your mind to operate a computer without moving a finger, these are just the few inventions that revolutionized the century. A large portion of the people, especially the young ones, believe that this is the best time to live. Business and entrepreneurship is booming, Food and supplies are abundant and medicine that can treat HIV and cancer are in the forefront of discovery. However, some tend to disagree for there are wars and rumours of war between opposing countries. Majority of African nations are still suffering and short of the most basic necessities such as food and medicine. Education all aroud the world suffers because of emerging technologies that steal the attention of our young. According to a recent study conducted by the American Association of Psychologist, young people today has an attention span of 15 minutes, just like a gold fish. Morever, the third world countries are still abused by their own government through corruption and unequal opportunities for the people whom they swear to serve.

I would argue that one of the most interesting time to live in is that of the 80's because of cheap cost of living, less pollution, manageable traffic congestion, and a government that is loyal to its people. How I wish I can go back to that time. Where my mind is free from stress and worries. Living like a child in a small and peaceful town, reminded me of what life truly is. Now people, stress themselves looking for money, running for cheese like a mouse in a maze. Inflicted by inflation, climate change, and pandemic that spreads without warning.

I hope that there will come a day where everyone can work together to build a nation that is worthy to be called a golden age.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions: you comment on whether the present is the best era and identify the 1980s as another period you would find interesting. Your view that the present has major benefits but also serious problems is understandable, and the examples of medical advances, conflict, and inequality are relevant. However, the first paragraph mainly lists advantages and disadvantages without clearly stating whether you ultimately agree that this is the best time to live. The case for the 1980s is more personal, but claims such as lower living costs, less pollution, and a more loyal government are asserted rather than explained or supported with a specific example. Make your overall position explicit and develop the reasons for choosing the 1980s more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: the opening discusses life today, the next paragraph focuses on the 1980s, and the final sentence offers a concluding hope. This gives the reader a coherent overall arrangement. Within paragraphs, however, ideas sometimes move abruptly—for example, the discussion shifts from education and attention spans to government corruption without showing how these points connect. The transition from the present-day discussion to your preferred historical period could also be clearer. Some sentence fragments, such as “Where my mind is free from stress and worries,” interrupt the flow, while the final paragraph introduces a broad idea rather than drawing together your answer. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and make each paragraph’s purpose more consistent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You show an adequate range and some willingness to use vivid or less common language, including “entrepreneurship,” “abundant,” “unequal opportunities,” and “inflicted by inflation.” These choices help convey your concerns, and the image of “running for cheese like a mouse in a maze” is memorable. At times, though, word choice or collocation is inaccurate or informal: “the few inventions” is awkward in context, “gold fish” is an imprecise comparison, and “running for cheese” may distract from the argument. There are also spelling errors such as “aroud” and “Morever.” To strengthen this area, choose precise, natural expressions for formal discussion and check spelling; the range is promising, but control is not yet consistently flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “devices that can allow your mind to operate a computer” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Business and entrepreneurship is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “young people today has” should use a plural verb. The sentence beginning “Artificial intelligence, flying cars…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, as is “Where my mind is free from stress and worries.” There are also tense and sentence-construction issues in “Living like a child… reminded me” and “Now people, stress themselves.” Aim to form complete sentences consistently and check agreement, tense, and punctuation.
