Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Joey,

Hopefully you and your family are in great spirits! I'm so sorry for not being in touch lately, but I wanted to make up for it now by giving you a advice about what to choose in between to go to college or get a job.

While it comes to select in between job or to continue college, I would give an advice to get job because at this stage of life you need to be resposible for giving better lives to your family and your loved ones. Not only might you get a good life-style, but with this early age experiance you can earn respect in your later years. While going to college will waste you few years in term of getting early experiance and maturity.

Regarding selecting the perfect job, you should better start looking for you interested fields like IT, Desiging, Developing. I'm suggesting you this because the future is the AI. Also, Jobs like this offers flexible working hours and less physical work.

Give my love to your family. Do get back to me whenever you get a chance. Can't wait to see you soon!

Warmly,

Atharva

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear recommendation to get a job and address all three requested points: you explain that college would delay work experience, describe employment as a route to responsibility and income, and suggest IT, design and development roles. The advice is relevant to your friend, but some reasons are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that college would be unenjoyable is only implied through “waste you few years”; it does not explain what about college Joey would dislike. The benefits of work are also quite general, and the job suggestions would be stronger if linked to Joey’s interests or abilities. Develop these points with specific, personal reasons and examples so the advice feels more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall shape: a friendly opening, a paragraph giving your recommendation, a paragraph suggesting jobs, and an appropriate closing. The reader can follow the main progression from the choice to the practical advice. You also use linking expressions such as “Not only” and “Regarding,” showing some range in connecting ideas. However, some links are awkward or unclear, particularly “While it comes to select in between job or to continue college,” and the relationship between the future of AI and the suggested jobs could be made more explicit. The first main paragraph also combines several reasons without clearly separating them. Use simpler transitions and organise each paragraph around one main point to make the progression more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary relevant to work and future plans, including “responsible,” “experience,” “maturity,” and “flexible working hours.” These choices help communicate your main advice, and the friendly tone is suitable for a letter to a friend. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “a advice,” “in between,” “better lives,” “life-style,” “experiance,” and “Desiging.” Some phrases, such as “the future is the AI,” are also unclear or unnatural. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding ambitious wording; proofreading spelling and checking common collocations would make your message more fluent and easier to read.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “Not only might you get a good life-style, but…” and “I'm suggesting you this because…”. The overall meaning is generally understandable, and the letter includes a range of sentence purposes. However, errors occur in several grammatical patterns. For example, “While it comes to select” needs a different clause structure, “you need to be resposible for giving” is awkwardly formed, and “Jobs like this offers” has a subject–verb agreement error. Articles and prepositions also need attention, as in “get job” and “waste you few years.” Practise accurate clause patterns, agreement and article use, then proofread each sentence to catch these issues.
