Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Shruthi,

I hope this message finds you well. Yesterday, I received your letter and I know that you are concerned about your future decisions, I am always here to support you and will guide you towards the right direction.

According to me, in this competitive era you should try to get a job related to the field and your interest. At a moment you have recently graduated from school and it will be the same environment for you. Furthermore, I know you very well. You often get bored and frustrated with same routine and studies. Thus, I believe that you should find an employment for the skills you already have.

Moreover, I know you always wanted to fulfill your dreams in your adulthood but due to your family issues and tight budget your parents unable to support you. According to me this is the best time for you to earn money and enjoy your life. Another reason is that you can support your parents financially and that is the best way to show that you are responsible and mature enough to be an independent.

I would like to suggest you some considerable options for the jobs that would be suitable for you. Since you have a certificate of Cad Technology you are able to apply for the construction designer position which has a good reputation in terms of wage. Another option is child educator, since you love working with juveniles you will enjoy the job position, the best part of this job is that you will get more than enough vacation days as compared to other jobs.

Please do not hesitate to ask any further questions if you have in future.

Yours faithfully,

Himani.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain why college might not be enjoyable, provide a logical argument for entering the workforce, and offer two specific job suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a supportive and personal voice throughout. Your ideas are well-developed, particularly the reasoning regarding the student's need for a change of environment and the financial benefits of working. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the personal opening and the advice is slightly smoother, and avoid minor logical gaps, such as the assumption that all school graduates find the college environment identical to their previous schooling.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Another reason is' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the way you connect sentences and ensure that the flow between the personal opening and the advice section is more natural. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'competitive era', 'financially', and 'independent'. You successfully incorporate topic-specific terms like 'Cad Technology' and 'construction designer'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'at a moment' instead of 'at the moment' and 'find an employment' instead of 'find employment'. Additionally, 'juveniles' is slightly formal or clinical in this context; 'children' or 'young people' would be more natural when writing to a friend. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and with some precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'your parents unable to support you' (missing 'are'), 'suggest you some considerable options' (should be 'suggest some options to you'), and 'be an independent' (should be 'be independent'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some comma splices, such as in the first paragraph. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of articles and prepositions.
