IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently received a letter from a friend asking for advice about whether to go to college or to try to get a job. You think he/she should get a job.
Write a letter to this friend. In your letter
- say why he/she would not enjoy going to college
- explain why getting a job is a good idea for him/her
- suggest types of job that would be suitable for him/her
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well. I got to know that you are unsure whether you should join college or start working. Personally, I believe that you should start working to experience real world instead of continuing studies.
As I know that you are always interested in hands-on experience rather than textbook learning. If you took admission in college you have to attend lectures, prepare assignments, and sit in exams that you would not prefer.
At present, working will benefit you more as you can gain experience and get exposure to the real working conditions. Conversely, you can decide what you would like to learn or pursue in future.
I think as you enjoy working in a team and doing mechanical work. Working in a automobile garage, hotel, or restaurant would suit you because you can learn new things and build confidence, communication skills.
I hope you will think about my advice. Let me know what you decide.
Best wishes,
Anshu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly explain why college might not be suitable for your friend, provide a logical argument for choosing work, and suggest specific job types. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' behind your suggestions to provide more depth, as some points are quite brief. However, you have fully satisfied the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing that separates the different points of your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'At present', 'Conversely', and 'I think' to guide the reader through your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the structure is appropriate for a formal-informal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hands-on experience', 'textbook learning', and 'working conditions'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'If you took admission in college' (should be 'If you were to enroll in college') and 'doing mechanical work' (which is slightly vague). While you communicate your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations and less common vocabulary would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I got to know that you are unsure' (a bit informal/unnatural; 'I heard that' or 'I understand that' would be better) and 'If you took admission... you have to attend' (tense inconsistency; should be 'If you were to take admission... you would have to attend'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Focusing on consistent verb tenses will help improve your accuracy.
