Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Harry,

It's been a while we last met! And I do remember you were asking me about going for further graduate studies or getting a job. I thought a lot over it and came up on an opinion that you should definitely go for a job at first.

First of all, I know how worse you were at studying, especially theoratical subjects, that you used to just skip for exams. Another thing is your viewpoint, it is always very creative and practical in the field of science and physics. I do have idea about it from your 12th grade science project. It showcased your understanding of concept and building innovative mechanisms; physics and electricity really fasinates you in daily life.

After doing some research, I concluded some roles that might suit you such as industry technician or technical support person. These roles require basic technical skills, good communication skills and a diploma degree, which you already possess.

Let me know what do you think about my suggestions and how it goes! Hope to see you soon.

Regards,

John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why college might not be suitable for your friend, provide a logical reason for choosing a job, and suggest specific roles. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' behind your suggestions to provide more depth, but overall, the task requirements are fully met with relevant and well-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'First of all' and 'Another thing is', though some transitions could be more sophisticated. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve, try to vary your linking words further to ensure the flow between sentences feels even more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'innovative mechanisms' and 'technical support'. However, there are some spelling errors ('theoratical', 'fasinates') and minor word choice issues, such as 'came up on an opinion' (should be 'came to the opinion') and 'how worse you were' (should be 'how bad you were'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on accurate collocations and proofreading for spelling will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'It's been a while we last met' (missing 'since'), 'I do have idea' (missing an article), and 'Let me know what do you think' (incorrect word order in an indirect question). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage, prepositional phrases, and sentence structure in indirect questions.
