Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mira,

I hope everything is going fine at your end. I'm thrilled to hear from you that you want an advice for making a choice between going to college or finding a job.

In my perspective, you should consider gaining experience for future instead of attending a college course. By learning from my past, I can safely say that earning money is more beneficial than obtaining a college or university degree.

Obtaining an employment opportunity is a good idea because in few years you will have enough experience to apply for positions like supervisor or manager at a competitive salary. This is more beneficial because, you will finish your academic course in probably two to three years from now which will make you start at the same level as today.

Plus, there are plenty of options to consider such as working as a warehouse associate and in restaurant. These choices provide faster growth in the facility. However, you can also choose to be a sales representative at an automotive company or at a luxury clothing store.

I hope you will find this information useful. Let me know if you need any further assistance. All the best.

Love,

Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly state why college might not be enjoyable, explain the benefits of working, and provide specific job examples. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why college is less beneficial could be more nuanced, and the connection between the suggested jobs and 'faster growth' is asserted rather than fully explained. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more thoroughly supported with clear reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'In my perspective,' 'Plus,' and 'However' to link ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences within paragraphs is smoother to create a more natural, cohesive text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'obtaining an employment opportunity,' 'competitive salary,' and 'academic course.' There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'want an advice' (advice is uncountable) and 'in few years' (needs 'a few'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more idiomatic expressions or precise collocations related to career and education would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'want an advice' (article usage), 'in few years' (article omission), and 'in restaurant' (missing article). Additionally, the sentence 'This is more beneficial because, you will finish...' contains an unnecessary comma. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for articles and punctuation to improve your accuracy.
