Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Robin,
Hello, how're you. I'm glad that you're serious about your future and planning before taking any step.
Didn't you graduated recently? I think you have enjoyed college life and you have more than enough certifications. You shouldn't think about enrolling in college again because it's time for getting some practical experience which could be related to your field of study.
Applying for a job would be good idea as you might be start getting hands on experience and earn some money. Starting a job would not only help in learning new skills but earning money would also help you in managing your expenses as you would know the value of money.
First of all, you should listen to your mind that what kind of job you love to do. I believe you should apply for a receptionist because it would be easy for a good starting and I know about your good communications skills. In addition, you could apply for a gym trainer as you have been doing exercises since school time.
I wish you great success. Please let me know if you need any further suggestions.
Love,
Dharmveer.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining why college is not ideal, why a job is beneficial, and suggesting suitable roles. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the position is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed for a General Training Task 1. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific detail or personal anecdotes to make the advice feel more tailored and persuasive, rather than relying on general statements about the value of money or communication skills.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'In addition', and 'not only... but' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common collocations, such as 'practical experience' and 'managing your expenses'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'you might be start getting' (should be 'you might start getting') and 'easy for a good starting' (should be 'a good starting point'). The range is sufficient, but more precise vocabulary would elevate the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'how're you' (informal/incorrect contraction), 'Didn't you graduated' (should be 'graduate'), and 'listen to your mind that what kind of job' (awkward phrasing). Despite these errors, the student demonstrates a reasonable command of grammar, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and improving subject-verb agreement would improve the score.
