Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Zalak,

I hope you are doing great. It’s been long time to see you.

I am writing this letter to suggest some ideas to choose job to support family rather than higher study.

As I know when we were in school days and spending a lot of time together in college as well you don’t have an interest in study. Moreover, you already finish your masters in computer engineering, now it is better opportunity to find a job. As you told me you have a family to support them with financially as your dad is already got their retirement and your sister’s wedding is near so you can try to find a good job.

Nowadays, it is easy to find a job in computer field as everything is related to technology. In addition to that you love coding so not only it will beneficial for future to do coding and make a games but also it will fulfill your interest in gaming career.

Yours best friend

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state why college is not suitable, explain the benefits of working, and suggest specific job types. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding why your friend would not enjoy college is brief and relies on a general statement about their past lack of interest. To reach a higher band, you should expand on these ideas with more specific reasoning or personal anecdotes. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition to that', and 'not only... but also' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, though the sentence 'as your dad is already got their retirement' is grammatically awkward, which slightly disrupts the flow of the argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'computer engineering', 'financially', and 'beneficial'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'It’s been long time to see you' (should be 'a long time since I saw you') and 'dad is already got their retirement' (should be 'has retired'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations and phrasal structures. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions suitable for informal correspondence would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'not only... but also' construction. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and articles, such as 'you already finish your masters' (should be 'have already finished') and 'in computer field' (should be 'in the computer field'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues throughout the text.
