Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sam,
I hope you are doing well. It was great to receive your letter. I understand that you are confused about whether to go to college or start working. After thinking about your situation, I believe getting a job would be the better choice for you.
I don't think you would enjoy going to college because you have never liked studying for long hours. I know that you always preferred practical work rather than academic work and writing assignments. In addition, college can be stressful because of exam and deadlines, which is not type of work for you.
I think getting a job is a great idea because it will allow you to gain real life experience and become financially independent. You can start earning money immediately instead of spending several years studying. Moreover, working will help you develop communication skills, team work and problem learning skill, which will be helpful near your future.
As for type of job, I think you would do well in customer service, sales or office administration because you are friendly, confident and good at dealing with people. You also can do well in retail industry or joining company that provide on job training. It will also helpful for your future growth.
I hope my advice helps you make the right decision. Whatever you choose, I am sure you will do well, keep me updated about your decision.
Yours lovingly,
Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state why college is unsuitable for your friend, explain the benefits of working, and provide specific job suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout the text. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more depth in the explanation of why college is stressful, perhaps by linking it to the specific nature of the friend's personality mentioned in the first paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a concluding remark. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'As for', which help the flow of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear. The letter follows a natural structure, making it easy for the reader to follow your argument from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'financially independent', 'real life experience', and 'office administration' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'problem learning skill' (likely meant 'problem-solving skills') and 'joining company' (missing an article). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing, such as using 'do well' multiple times in the fourth paragraph.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional structures and relative clauses effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'not type of work' (missing an article), 'It will also helpful' (missing a verb), and 'You also can do well' (word order). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the overall control of grammar is strong enough to support the communication of your ideas.
