Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Rahul,
I hope you are doing well. I received your letter yesterday, and I am really happy for you as you have passed high school and now you are getting ready for future opportunities. It would be my pleasure to give you some advice on whether you should enrolled yourself for studies or get experiance by doing job.
To begin with, I saw your high school grades, and I feel that instead of studying, you should first identify your area of interest in which you want to build your career. Also, from your childhood, I saw you were more interested in practical knowledge instead of book knowledge.
Therefore, I believe you should get a job and learn from the industry experts. Moreover, you would be able to help your family financially and support your family.
In my opinion, you should start your career in the maintenance department as you have a keen interest in machines from your childhood. Furthermore, it will help you strengthen your technical abilities.
Let me know if you have any doubts about my suggestion. Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Yours faithfully,
Manan.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain why college might not be the best fit, citing a preference for practical over theoretical knowledge. You also provide a logical justification for choosing a job and offer a specific suggestion regarding the maintenance department. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more detailed; for instance, you could elaborate on how the maintenance role specifically aligns with his skills to provide a more comprehensive recommendation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding sentence. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Therefore,' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. The progression of the argument is logical and easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that the transition between the suggestion of a job and the specific type of job feels more fluid. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal/semi-formal letter, and the overall structure supports the message effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'future opportunities,' 'practical knowledge,' and 'technical abilities.' However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'enrolled' instead of 'enroll' and 'experiance' instead of 'experience.' While these do not impede communication, they prevent the score from reaching the higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure accuracy in spelling common words. Incorporating slightly more sophisticated vocabulary related to career development would also enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'you should enrolled yourself' (should enroll) and 'doing job' (doing a job). Additionally, the phrase 'support your family' is repeated in the same sentence, which affects the flow. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy.
