Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Rahul,
I hope you are doing well. I received your letter yesterday, and I am really happy for you as you have passed high school and now you are getting ready for future opportunities. It would be my pleasure to give you some advice on whether you should enroll yourself for studies or get experience by doing a job.
To begin with, I saw your high school grades and I feel instead of studying you should first indentify your area of interest in which you want to build your career. Also, from your childhood I saw you interested in practical knowledge rather than learning from books.
Therefore, I believe you should get a job and learn from the industry experts. Moreover, you would enable you to help your family financially and make you responsible.
In my opinion, you should start your career as a maintenance technician; hence, it will help you learn basics and strengthen your technocal abilities.
Let me know if you have any doubts with my suggestions and I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
Yours faithfully,
Manan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why college might not be suitable by referencing your friend's preference for practical knowledge, you explain the benefits of working, and you provide a specific job suggestion. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, the explanation of why a job would help him financially is a bit underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'why' behind your suggestions to provide a more comprehensive response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Also', 'Therefore', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve, you could vary your linking words further and ensure that the progression between the idea of 'practical knowledge' and the 'maintenance technician' suggestion is more tightly integrated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'future opportunities', 'industry experts', and 'strengthen your technical abilities'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'indentify' (spelling) and 'technocal' (spelling), as well as a slight misuse in 'you would enable you to help', which should be 'it would enable you to help'. While you communicate your meaning clearly, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited to standard expressions. Incorporating more precise collocations or less common synonyms would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some grammatical slips, such as the aforementioned 'you would enable you to help' and the slightly awkward phrasing 'I saw you interested in practical knowledge'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though the use of 'hence' in the fourth paragraph is slightly forced in this informal context. Overall, your control of grammar is good, and errors do not impede communication.
