Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Gulshan,

Hope you are doing well. I completely understand the confusion you have regarding whether to attend a college or to get a new job.

Firstly I would suggest you to join the job rather than going to college for higher studies.I think this is the best time to build a career for yourself and start earning. The only reason why I don’t want you to waste time studying is because of the job market we have at the movement.

Once you get the job you’ll become independent and trust me you’ll like it when you start to earn on your own. As you did computer applications you will have number of options to go with especially in IT sector, Accountings, Assistant engineer positions and there are also lot of startup options in recent times.

If you still want to pursue higher studies there is always an option to take the course in between as company’s would provide you the fund along with the leave option to continue education.

Hope, you will give it a time to think and will take wise decision. Let me know whatever your decision is.

Yours lovingly,

priya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly state your preference for employment over college, explain the benefits of working, and provide specific examples of suitable roles. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To improve, you could expand slightly on why your friend might not enjoy college; currently, you mention the 'job market' as the reason to avoid college, which is a bit ambiguous. Developing the 'why' more clearly—perhaps by mentioning the desire for practical experience or the burden of tuition fees—would strengthen the response and help you reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Once you get the job', and 'If you still want to'. While the flow is generally good, the paragraphing could be more distinct to separate the different points (e.g., one paragraph for the drawbacks of college and another for the benefits of working). Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, but the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'higher studies', 'independent', and 'startup options'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'at the movement' (should be 'at the moment') and 'Accountings' (should be 'accounting'). Additionally, 'join the job' is not a natural collocation; 'start working' or 'enter the workforce' would be more precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more varied and precise collocations would help elevate your score to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional sentence in the fourth paragraph. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'you’ll like it when you start to earn on your own' (missing an object or needing a slightly different structure) and 'company’s would provide' (incorrect use of the apostrophe for a plural noun). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences could benefit from better comma usage to improve readability. The errors present do not impede communication, but more consistent control over pluralization and verb forms is needed for a higher score.
