Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Lisa,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to respond the questions from your letter which I received last week regarding weather to choose college or a job.

After careful consideration, I would like to recommend you to find a job that can support your future studies and after managing the funds you can plan your college. In addition, you will always be stressed about school work and due to that you will have less time to work. I was always sad when I had to manage my tuition fees and I had to work full time to be financially burden free.

Furthermore, Working will give you an Idea of how the money works. Since, you have never worked in the past, it can be quite challenging but over the time one can always get used to it. There are plenty of jobs which does not require hard labour and it's always a fun idea to refresh your mind by changing the environment.

You have always been disciplined in school and got great marks in maths. I would suggest you to find a job which can help you support your resume for further work in the field. If not there are always desk jobs which are easy to do.

I hope you will try to implement my suggested ideas.

Yours faithfully,

Suhel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why college might be difficult, the benefits of working, and suggesting suitable jobs. Your position is clear throughout the letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when discussing why college might be unenjoyable, you focus primarily on financial stress rather than the academic or social aspects of college life. To reach a higher band, try to expand on your reasoning with more specific examples or personal anecdotes that make your advice feel more tailored to your friend's situation. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Since,' which help guide the reader through your arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single main idea to improve the overall progression of your argument. Referencing is generally clear, and the letter follows a standard, appropriate structure for a friendly correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'consideration,' 'financially,' and 'disciplined.' There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'respond the questions' (should be 'respond to') and 'weather' (should be 'whether'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'financially burden free.' While you attempt to use more complex vocabulary, these occasional inaccuracies prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on collocations and ensure you are using the correct prepositions with your verbs. The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'jobs which does not require' (should be 'do not require') and 'over the time' (should be 'over time'). Punctuation is generally fine, but there are some issues with sentence construction that occasionally distract the reader. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve the accuracy of your writing.
