Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Dhara,

I hope this letter finds you well. it was great to hear from you. I am glad you have considered me on this significant decision. Dhara understand, your hesitation about college and career and I know that is many difficult choice to make continue your study or find a job.

However, I think it is better for you to try to get a job, and I would like to explain the reason why Firstly, I know your personality. You have always liked working and you do not enjoy going to college. Adding that, I remember that hard studing was the opposite of your morality.

Furthermore, going to college is not beneficial for you because that will take all of your daily time, and you can't continue your interests in terms of work.

Thus, I assume if you enter to work life you will gain valuable experience that can build your CV ,and enhance your skills for future employment. In fact, I would recommend you to work in a big factory as a technical worker that matches your talent, and you can improve your skills as soon as possible. Thus, this position is one the best situations for you. Whereas, I remember you have extreme talent according to technical methods. Adding that, I have many relationships and friends who are factory owners and I can find a good job for you easily.

To conclude, I hope my suggestion helps you. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

your faithfully,

Dhara

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining why college is not suitable, why a job is a good idea, and suggesting specific types of work. Your position is clear throughout the letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding why college is not suitable relies on general statements about 'morality' and 'daily time' rather than specific, persuasive arguments. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are more logically developed and directly relevant to the friend's situation. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a consistent personal register.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'Adding that' used at the start of sentences. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between your friend's personality and their dislike for college could be more smoothly articulated. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words will enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, including terms like 'significant decision', 'valuable experience', and 'employment'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'hard studing was the opposite of your morality' and 'enter to work life'. These errors occasionally make the meaning slightly opaque. You also repeat certain words, such as 'skills' and 'job', which limits the sophistication of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise synonyms to avoid repetition and improve the naturalness of your expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive step. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('Dhara understand'), article usage ('the opposite of your morality'), and sentence fragments or run-on sentences ('Adding that, I remember...'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage will help you achieve greater accuracy.
