Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sam,
Thanks for your last letter. It was great to hear from you! I was really happy to catch up on your news, and I am glad you asked for my advice about whether to go on college or start working.
To be honest, I think going to college might not be the best choice for you. As you know, university involves sitting through long lectures, reading heavy textbooks, and spending countless hours writing long essays. Since you have always preferred practical works over sitting at a desk studying theory, I feel you would quickly get bored and stressed with all exams and research papers.
On the other hand, getting a job right now seems like a fantastic idea. First of all, you will start earning your own money, which will give you financial independence and freedom. Secondly, gaining real world work experience early will help you build practical skills much faster than sitting in a classroom. Employers really value hand on experience, so starting early gives you a great head start in your career.
Considering your strong communication skills and practical personally, I think you would do really well in a customer service or sales role. Alternatively, an entry level position in event management or retail management would suit you well because you enjoy working with people and solving problems on your feet.
Think about it carefully, but in my opinion, stepping directly into the working world will make you much happier. Let me know what you decide.
Best wishes,
Nek

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why college might not be suitable, provide logical reasons for choosing employment, and offer specific, relevant job suggestions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and your position is consistent throughout. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning 'financial independence' and 'event management'. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a natural conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'Alternatively', which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear, making the letter easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for this informal/semi-formal context. Phrases like 'financial independence', 'real world work experience', and 'solving problems on your feet' are used accurately. There are a few minor collocation errors, such as 'practical works' (should be 'practical work') and 'practical personally' (should be 'practical personality'). However, these do not impede communication. You show a good ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to education and employment.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as 'go on college' (should be 'go to college') and 'hand on experience' (should be 'hands-on experience'). These are occasional, non-systematic errors that do not affect the clarity of your message. Your use of modal verbs and conditional structures is accurate and adds variety to your writing.
