Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Rahul,

I hope this letter finds you well. I feel delighted to share some advice to make you choice between securing a job or pursuing higher studies.

To commence with, although college plays a crucial role in developing some skills, I believe skills developed during a job are more essential. In addition, colleges focus only on theoretical knowledge; however, practical skills needed to carry out large scale projects can be learned in job.

furthermore, I am aware that your financial situation is not well. Therefore, you will also save a course fees by not enrolling in college, which can be utilized to learn the latest technology.

There are many jobs available in market, which are suitable for you especially software engineer. I know you always aspire to open startup and securing a job is first step towards achieving your goal.

I would love to share more invaluable advice to begin with startup in the near future. Please do not hesitate to ask me any doubts.

Best Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain why college might not be the best fit, highlight the financial and practical benefits of working, and suggest a specific career path. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more fully developed. For instance, when discussing why he would not enjoy college, you could elaborate on the pressure of exams or the lack of real-world application, rather than just stating it focuses on theory. Your position is clear throughout, and the letter effectively fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'In addition', and 'furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing is precise. For example, in the second paragraph, 'a course fees' is grammatically incorrect and disrupts the flow of the sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'theoretical knowledge', 'invaluable', and 'aspire'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'make you choice' (should be 'make your choice'), 'save a course fees' (should be 'save on course fees'), and 'begin with startup' (should be 'begin a startup'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I feel delighted to share some advice to make you choice' and 'available in market' (missing the article 'the'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as starting a sentence with 'furthermore' without a capital letter. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
