IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently received a letter from a friend asking for advice about whether to go to college or to try to get a job. You think he/she should get a job.
Write a letter to this friend. In your letter

- explain why getting a job is a good idea for him/her
- suggest types of job that would be suitable for him/her
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Rick,
I hope you and your family are doing well. I learned from your last letter that you are unsure whether to start a new job or go back to college to earn a degree. I'm more than happy to assist you in this dilemma.
My recommendation is that you apply for a job in your field, leveraging your skills and experience in welding. One of the reasons are, you would like to go to college again in your thirties, and it would be hard to manage your family life and academic career simultaneously.
Given that, getting a job with your relevant skills is the better choice because it will make you financially stable. Additionally, there will be opportunities for career growth in the near future, and you are not wasting time in college getting another degree.
Since you have completed your bachelors in physiotherapy, you would be the top candidate for jobs like sports physiotherapist, rehabilitation worker and physio assistant roles.
Sending lots of love to you and your family. If you have any doubts, you can contact me; keep in touch
Best wishes,
Basil.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain why college might be difficult, why a job is preferable, and provide specific, relevant job suggestions based on the friend's background in physiotherapy. The tone is appropriate for a friendly letter, and the position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the personal benefits of working, such as the social aspect or the satisfaction of applying practical knowledge, to ensure the ideas are fully developed rather than just stated. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'Given that', 'Additionally', and 'Since' to link your thoughts, which helps the flow of the letter. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly more seamless, perhaps by linking the financial stability mentioned in the second paragraph to the specific job roles mentioned in the third.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'leveraging', 'simultaneously', and 'rehabilitation'. The word choice is generally accurate and natural. There is a minor error in 'bachelors' (should be 'bachelor's degree'), but this does not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that would be natural in a letter to a friend, such as 'weighing up your options' or 'a golden opportunity'. Your current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I learned from your last letter that you are unsure whether to start a new job or go back to college'. There is a minor grammatical error in the sentence 'One of the reasons are', which should be 'One of the reasons is'. However, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. To improve, aim for more variety in your complex sentence structures and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text.
